INO80 senses nucleosomal DNA rigidity in shaping chromatin

27.11.2025

A collaboration between Bartholomew and Hopfner labs reports that the INO80 chromatin remodeler arranges nucleosomes at defined genomic sites, including the 5′ ends of genes. Instead of reading specific DNA sequences, INO80 detects characteristic DNA shapes. Its repositioning activity stalls when it encounters rigid DNA within the nucleosome, a barrier sensed through the DNA-rigidity–dependent binding of the Arp5 subunit.
